Paying Tribute to the Troops - Memorial Day 2008

I had the great privilege this morning to attend and participate in the dedication of a new Veterans Memorial in Lenexa. Several hundred other folks joined in honoring the millions of young men and women who have selflessly answered their Country’s call to service. This dedication gave each of us the opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing our servicemen and women fighting for freedom throughout the World.

With the enormity of the obstacles facing our men and women in uniform on a daily basis, it’s imperative that their representatives and government work together to provide them all the resources they need to be successful and not using the funding of those resources to play political games .

It is my hope that Congress and elected officials everywhere honor the sacrifices of those who serve by tackling the critical issues facing our country. This Memorial Day, I would like to personally thank all those who have served, past and present, especially those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to make America the beacon of freedom for the world.

Last Day of Session 2008

It's hard to believe but this evening the 2008 Senate, as well as my career in Topeka, has come to a close. The last three months were long and, at times, contentious, but at the end of the day, it was all worthwhile.

While nearly all elected officials have temporarily vacated Topeka for the year, unlike many others, I have left the great State of Kansas' Capitol for one last time. I have had the privilege of representing the people of Kansas for the last 13 years as a State Senator.

When I initially joined the Senate, I committed myself to keeping Kansas' economy strong and competitive. Whether it was co-authoring the Kansas Economic Growth Act, which, through development of the bio-sciences, will promote finding cures and job creation, or consistently opposing wasteful spending, I've made the growth of our State's economy among my top priorities.

Small businesses are the #1 engine for job growth in this country. So in order to keep our economy strong, it is imperative that we do not impede growth of small businesses and that we do everything in our power to help them thrive. That's why I have focused on helping small businesses in our state grow. I was honored when the National Federation of Independent Business (N.F.I.B.) awarded me their 'Defender of Small Business' award, recognizing my support for small businesses in Kansas.

I have truly enjoyed serving the citizens of my district but over the last few years, I have noticed growing problems with our officials in Washington. Rather than dealing with the critical issues facing our country, they seem to prefer fighting and bickering. Instead of solving problems, they would rather make empty promises that remain unfulfilled.

I just cannot sit back and watch Congress continually fail the American people. There's simply too much at stake – both for Kansas and the country. That's why I've decided to run for the United States Congress.

The time has come to change the status quo – we've given these folks too much time in Washington and seen little to no results. I've been able to build bridges and make a difference in the Kansas Senate and I hope to do the same in Congress. With your help, we can wake up Washington and see a new day for Kansas and America.

Thanks so much for the opportunity to serve you in the Kansas Senate for the last 13 years. It's been one heck of a ride. I look forward to working with you over the next few months as we bring our positive message to the good people of Kansas' 3^rd Congressional District.
